Interview The Author
What inspired you to start writing, and how did you come up with the concept for your debut book?
I was writing a short story for an October Spooky challenge on Vocal.com, where I still write sometimes. The challenge was to write a spooky story that had fog on a body of water. The problem was that there was a word limit, and I never finished the story. About two years later, I decided I wanted to finish it, and about a hundred pages in, I wasn't close to being done, so I kept going.
How did you find your writing voice, and did it change as you worked on your book?
It changed drastically as I was writing! Again, I wrote my debut novel as a short story two years before I picked it up again. Even as I was writing it, which took a year, I realized the character's voice was changing, but I think it's almost imperative that it does. It proves that there is character development, which obviously is important.
What advice would you give to other first-time authors who are just starting their writing journey?
Plot everything out! Take notes and build your character. I plan everything so I know where each puzzle fits. In the same vein, though, being okay with the direction you thought your story would go may not be where it does. Sometimes the story builds in unexpected ways, and you have to be willing to let it write itself. Be patient, but make goals to stay on track. Writer's block is a real thing!
What was the biggest challenge you faced while writing your first book, and how did you overcome it?
Well, I faced a few. I guess the biggest one would be creating the plot twist. Mysteries are difficult to write because you don't want the reader to guess straight off who the killer is. I didn't want there to be this "ah, ha" moment where the answer was given to the reader before the main character. I wanted the reader to find out when the character found out. Wanted to maintain a "keep them guessing".
What's next for you? Are there any future projects you're currently working on?
I'm always working on the next thing! I have a few projects in the works, not just with writing. I am working on my next book, and this one is going to be really special. I can't wait for people to read it.
